Most people head here for adventure or beach time, with just a short stay in the capital of San Jose. During your time here, you’ll discover a vibrant and city that although not packed with sites and attractions, has a cool drinking and dining scene, a handful of museums and plenty of green space – a taste of things to come.
The capital, its suburbs and the country’s other larger cities (such as Alajuela and Heredia) sit in the fertile Central Valley. This is where most of the country’s world-renowned coffee is grown. You can take a tour of some of the many of the plantations in the region or even spend a night on a farm: La Finca Rosa Blanca is one of the most popular places to stay in the area. Other Central Valley attractions include the cloud forests of Tapantí National Park, the untouched rainforests of Braulio National Park and the active Irazú Volcano with its bright green crater lake.
Just to the north of the Central Valley, in the Plains of the North region, is the most famous (and most active) of the country’s six volcanoes, Arenal. This is one of the most visited destinations in Costa Rica with people heading here to hike, soak in hot springs, go zip lining or canyoning and, of course, to see the perfect cone shape of the volcano.
Of the country’s two coastlines, the Caribbean side is generally the lesser-visited. This is the perfect place to come for sheltered waters, diving and snorkelling opportunities and to see Costa Rica’s famous wildlife. The most popular spot along the coast is Tortuguero National Park. Covering 47,000 acres, its beaches, lagoons, swamps and forests are home to an incredible array of wildlife, including endangered species such as great green macaws, manatees, tapirs and jaguars. The park’s most famous residents are the sea turtles. At various times of the year, three species of turtles heave themselves up from the sea and lay their eggs in the sand. This usually happens at night so you’ll need to join an official guide as the beaches are off-limits from 6pm each day.
Other sought-after spots along the eastern edge of Costa Rica include the backpacker-friendly Puerto Viejo – the place to go if you’re looking to party – and the more chilled out diving town of Manzanillo. For a more off-the-beaten-track vibe, hike through the jungles of Cahuita National Park to reach Puerta Vargas beach.
Over on the west coast, it’s mostly about sun, sea, surf and luxury resorts, particularly in the northern Guanacaste region and the Central Pacific area. There are also some pretty spectacular national parks down in the south. If all you’re seeking is a beach retreat, head to the beautifully rugged Nicoya Peninsula. Retreat to resort towns such as Playa Grande – another famous turtle nesting site and one of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica. We love the remote hippy hangout of Montezuma and Mal País, another surfing hotspot. For a more a lively resort town experience, stay in Tamarindo.
Head south from the peninsula and past the port town of Puntarenas and you’ll eventually reach the paradise forest-meets-beach landscapes of Manuel Antonio National Park. It might the smallest park in the country but it packs a lot of beauty and incredible biodiversity into its seven and a half square miles. Within the park, which is crisscrossed by hiking trails, there are over 100 mammal species – including the two-toed sloth and red-backed squirrel monkeys – and 184 bird species. In high season (December to April), arrive early as the park is incredibly popular and visitor numbers are limited.
A little further south and reached by long and sometimes bumpy jungle roads, is Corcovado National Park which protects untouched old-growth rainforest. This vast park on the Osa Peninsula is home to a remarkable amount of fauna from stalking jaguars to tiny red-eye tree frogs. You might also see Bird’s tapirs, striking scarlet macaws, resplendent quetzals and sea turtles. Base yourself in a rustic-chic eco-lodge in one of of the two nearby towns and head out on foot into the park (there are no roads in the park); this is a proper eco-adventure destination.
