The main village of Gstaad sits where two valleys meet, 1,050 metres above sea level in the heart of one of Switzerland’s largest ski areas. It’s lively both day and night as people meet to shop in upscale boutiques, dine at award-winning restaurants or swap shopping for the slopes and head out to enjoy the great outdoors.
Like many of its Alpine neighbours, the region is noted for its winter pursuits. The larger Gstaad region, which includes other villages along the two valleys such as Schönried, Zweisimmen and Saanen, boasts over 150 miles of pistes at varying levels, in terms of both experience and altitude. There are large ski areas, such as the one linking the villages of Saanenmöser, Zweisimmen and St Stephan, and smaller hills linked by road or the train that runs along the valley floor. From the village of Gstaad itself, you can head up to the peak of Wispile, a particular favourite with families; Wasserngrat, where you’ll find the area’s steepest piste, Tiger Run; or Eggli with its wide, beginner-friendly slopes.
More advanced pistes can be found up at Glacier 3000, the only glacier ski area in the Bernese Oberland region. Open from late October to early May, this high-altitude spot has a six-mile black run, a five-mile red run, a snow park and a network of ski-touring routes. Additional winter activities on offer in the region include cross-country skiing and night skiing on the floodlit slopes of Rinderberg Mountain, which is accessed from Zweisimmen. There’s even a number of winter hiking trails up in the mountains and down in the valley, so it’s definitely worth bringing some snowshoes.
Once most of the snow has melted in the late spring to early summer, the region is heaven for hikers. Quintessential Swiss scenes of flower-filled meadows framing towering peaks and cows grazing await visitors during the warmer months. There are more miles of hiking trails than there are pistes, with over 180 miles of well-maintained and clearly signposted paths. A handful of gondolas and lifts stay open to whisk visitors up into the mountains for some breathtaking walks. Some take just a couple of hours to complete – perfect for the less actively inclined or those with children in tow – while others are multi-day routes following quiet trails and otherwise unseen vistas. The Gstaad region is also home to an extensive network of mountain-biking trails that caters to different abilities.
Summer is also a great time to head up to Glacier 3000. As well as a restaurant and gift shop, there’s the adrenaline-inducing Alpine Coaster, which winds its way over the often snow-covered mountain plateau. You can also head out on a snow bus over the glacier, follow the hiking trail to Lake Sanetch or walk across the vertiginous Peak Walk by Tissot – the only suspension bridge in the world to connect two mountain peaks. Take in glorious 360-degree views; on a clear day, you may be able to glimpse the famous peaks of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn.
Thanks to its upscale atmosphere, it should come as no surprise that Gstaad is home to a selection of prestigious five-star hotels, ranging in style from castle-like to ultra-modern. Dominating the landscape is the theatrical Gstaad Palace, a longstanding favourite of visiting nobility and silver-screen stars. For a more designer stay, choose HUUS Gstaad or one of Ultima Gstaad’s six residences.
