It is owned by Miami-Dade County and is operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. The facility is within the Florida Everglades and was planned to be the biggest airport in the world. In 1968, when building on the Everglade Jetport began, there were environmental concerns which brought the construction of the six-runway airport to an end.
