Africa Cup of Nations

Where: Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire)

This biannual football tournament is a four-week competition featuring 24 teams from around Africa. This year, AFCON 2023 takes place in Ivory Coast, who beat Guinea, Zambia and Algeria to hosting duties.

Australian Open

Where: Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The first Grand Slam of 2024 sees the world’s best tennis players compete on the hard courts at Melbourne Park. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has won the competition a record 10 times and will once again be the one to beat.

February

Six Nations

When: 2 Feb – 16 Mar
Where: England, France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Wales

This annual men’s rugby union championship welcomes fans to Twickenham Stadium in London, Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Stadio Olimpico in Rome and several French venues to watch England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France and defending champions Ireland battle it out for this year’s crown.

“The Big Game”

Where: Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

One of the most-watched sporting events of the year heads to Sin City for the first time. Featuring the winners of the East and West American football conferences, “The Big Game” has become a much-loved American tradition.

World Team Table Tennis Championships

When: 16 Feb – 25 Feb
Where: Busan Exhibition and Convention Center, Busan, South Korea

Having been cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, Busan will become the first South Korean City to host the World Table Tennis Championships in 2024. China's men's team holds a record 22 World Team Championship titles and will once again be the team to beat, but all nations have something to play for, with the quarterfinalists automatically qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Bahrain Grand Prix

When: 29 Feb – 2 Mar
Where: Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain

The 2024 F1 season kicks off in the Middle East, with teams and their drivers descending on the Bahrain International Circuit. This race always brings an extra level of intrigue, as it reveals which teams have produced the best-performing cars during the off-season.

Cheltenham Festival

When: 12 Mar – 15 Mar
Where: Cheltenham Racecourse, England, UK

The Cheltenham Festival is one of the biggest horse-racing events of the year. Dubai World Cup

One of the world’s richest horse races, the Dubai World Cup attracts super-wealthy spectators and sets the city abuzz with activity.

The Masters

When: 8-14 Apr
Where: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia, USA

The U.S. Masters is the first, and perhaps the most prestigious, of the year’s four major annual golfing championships. The main tournament takes place over the last four days, from Thursday to Sunday, but there are practices and other events including the Par-3 contest to enjoy throughout the week.

Chinese Grand Prix

Where: Shanghai International Circuit, Shanghai

The Formula One teams head to the bright lights of Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix for the first time since 2019. Lewis Hamilton has fond memories of the modern Shanghai International Circuit, having claimed victory six times.

Kentucky Derby

When: 4 May
Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Established in 1875, the Kentucky Derby caps the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. In the United States, the one-and-a-quarter-mile dash is known as the “fastest two minutes in sports” and it’s the first leg of the American Triple Crown (followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes).

French Open

Where: Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France

Top tennis players from around the world head to the clay courts of Roland Garros for the French Open – one of four grand slams on the tennis calendar. Can Rafael Nadal claim the title for a record-breaking fifteenth time, or will Novak Djokovic triumph?

Monaco Grand Prix

Indianapolis 500

24 Hours of Le Mans

Tour de France

This year is the first time the race isn’t finishing in the French capital, due to ongoing preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Wimbledon’s grass courts host the world’s best players for two weeks of competition in this prestigious grand slam. Carlos Alcaraz became the third-youngest men's player to win the tournament in 2023 after an incredible five-set thriller against Novak Djokovic.

Summer Olympics

Where: Paris, France

The 2024 Summer Olympics, also known as Paris 2024, will mainly take place in the French capital, although some events like football, sailing and surfing will also be held in 16 other cities and the French overseas territory of Tahiti.

America’s Cup

When: 22 Aug – 20 Oct
Where: Barcelona, Spain

The 37th America’s Cup (informally known as the Auld Mug) takes place along the Barcelona coastline. Dating back to 1851, the renowned sailing event is the world’s oldest international sporting trophy and remains one of the toughest competitions. Five teams compete in the Challenger Selection Series before taking on the defending champions in a final showdown in October (more details below).

U.S. Open

When: 26 Aug – 8 Sep
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York City, USA

The U.S. Open brings the world’s best tennis players to Flushing Meadows in New York City for two weeks of competition. Novak Djokovic claimed his record 24th grand slam at the tournament last year, so can he hold off another charge from Carlos Alcaraz?

Summer Paralympics

When: 28 Aug – 8 Sep
Where: Paris, France

Like the Summer Olympics, the 2024 Summer Paralympics are hosted mainly in Paris. The tournament features 549 events across 22 sports, with a record 235 women’s medal events.

Singapore Grand Prix

When: 20 Sep – 22 Sep
Where: Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore

The original Singapore Grand Prix was held at Thomson Road from 1966 to 1973, before returning to the F1 calendar in 2008 at the picturesque Marina Bay. The race was not only controversial, due to a deliberate crash from the Renault team, but it was the first-ever F1 race held at night.

UCI Road World Championships

When: 21 Sep – 29 Sep
Where: Zurich, Switzerland

The annual bicycle road racing world championship consists of road races, individual time trials and a mixed-team relay. It’s held in a different city or region every year, with the Swiss city of Zurich hosting in 2024.

MotoGP Grand Prix of Indonesia

When: 27 Sep – 29 Sep
Where: Mandalika Circuit, Indonesia

It’s a MotoGP in paradise as riders take on the new Mandalika Circuit on Lombok’s southern coast. The 4.3km street-style circuit boasts spectacular Pacific Ocean views, meaning spectators can soak up the scenery whilst watching the action on the track.

ICC Women's T20 World Cup

When: Sep – Oct
Where: Bangladesh

This biennial international women’s cricket tournament started in 2009 with eight participants, but this number has since increased to 10. Australia claimed their sixth title after beating hosts South Africa in the final.

MotoGP Grand Prix of Japan

When: 4 Oct – 6 Oct
Where: Twin Ring Motegi, Japan 

Japan has a long motorsports heritage and the country’s MotoGP is a homecoming of sorts for big-name teams Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki. Set in the beautiful Kanto region, Twin Ring Motegi is known for its track’s dramatic stop-start hairpins and also showcases historic motorcycles and cars at the Honda Collection Hall.

America's Cup Match

When: 12 Oct – 20 Oct
Where: Barcelona, Spain

Dubbed “the race with no second place”, this annual showdown between yachting’s two best teams has been going for over 170 years. This year, reigning champions Emirates Team New Zealand will face the winner of the Challenger Selection Series in a 13-race match, with the first team to win seven races clinching the coveted trophy.

MotoGP Grand Prix of Malaysia

When: 1 Nov – 3 Nov
Where: Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia

Featuring one of the longest laps in MotoGP, Malaysia’s MotoGP makes for a thrilling race. With two long straights, tight hairpin turns and wide corners, Sepang International Circuit’s unique track gives riders plenty of opportunities to showcase some exciting overtaking manoeuvres.

Melbourne Cup

When: 5 Nov
Where: Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

The “race that stops the nation” takes place on the first Tuesday in November every year and is even a national holiday in the states of Victoria and the ACT. Held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, the horse race has created historical moments, legendary victories and interstate rivalries since its inception in 1861.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

When: 6 Dec – 8 Dec
Where: Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi

This thrilling race draws the Formula One season to a close at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The winners of both the Drivers’ Championship and the Constructors' Championship are officially crowned on this day.
